The Historical Museum at Thun Castle
Since 2018 the museum castle has told its story across seven levels — from the cellar up to the towers. The monument itself becomes the exhibit.
The museum castle became reality in 2018. 130 years after the museum opened, and on the 800th anniversary of the death of its builder, Duke Berchtold V of Zähringen, it was given a unified presentation for the first time — the monument itself became the exhibit.
This makes the outstanding architectural significance of this cultural heritage tangible during your visit, right at the original.
A tour across seven levels
Cellar
Castle, town and country – 900 years of urban development. The exhibition on the history of the town of Thun.
1st floor
Trophies, coats of arms, relics – treasures from the Thun town hall collection.
2nd floor
From the Zähringen to the Bernese – 800 years of governors at Thun Castle.
3rd floor
The Knights’ Hall – a uniquely preserved high-medieval ceremonial hall in Switzerland.
4th floor
Ducal building, granary and prison – 800 years of Thun Castle.
5th floor
The Bernese hipped roof – a timber construction with a history.
