Swords, rapiers, sabres – Highlights from the Thun Castle Collection
The Thun Castle Foundation’s collection of historical weapons, uniforms and hunting culture includes a wide range of objects – from simple Swiss daggers to enormous gun barrels. Some of the weapons now in the possession of the Castle Museum have a special history closely linked to Thun, while others reflect interesting aspects of Swiss as well as European military history.
The selection presented here from the rich collection of bladed weapons invites visitors to learn more about the world of knights, magistrates, well-armed citizens of Thun, mercenaries, soldiers and hunting culture from the Middle Ages to the First World War. The bladed weapons on display are also always symbols of power. As an expression of male strength, but also as fashionable accessories, they were decorated, blessed, carried with great pride and inherited.
