Weibsteufel
Alpine thriller based on Karl Schönherr New version and direction: Simon Burkhalter
Business is booming at the border in the Alps. A sickly smuggler lives here with his wife, a cunning fox who has never been caught. But could he be caught if his wife were made compliant?
A young customs officer volunteers to seduce and interrogate the woman. But he has no idea that the two up there on the mountain have long known about the secret plan – information and goods change hands faster here than anyone in the village realises. The smuggler devises a perfidious plan: the woman is to respond to the border hunter’s wooing, to ensnare him until all the illegal cargo has been removed from the cellar – the dream of owning an expensive home in the marketplace seems within reach. Both men think they are sure of their plan: but they have done their sums without the woman.
Karl Schönherr’s play is one of the great classics of German-language theatre literature. High above Thun in the Knights’ Hall of Thun Castle, this play is given a new lease of life in a linguistic rewrite and with a team of renowned artists.
