An interactive tour on various themes of castle life, with a direct connection to Thun Castle.

Tour by modules – life in the Middle Ages

Tailor-made tours with thematic focuses (approx. 25–30 min each). The following modules are available:

  • Building
  • Religion

Workshop: medieval workshop – writing and weaving

A short tour focusing on textiles, documents and armour, then a hands-on activity: weaving with wool and writing with quills. Material included.

Themed tour: medieval builders’ lodge

On the trail of the castle’s architects: wood and stone, measuring, the building trade and load transport. We measure and calculate just as the master builder once did. Material included.

Justice and the penal system through the biography of Margaritha Hürner, who awaited her sentence in Thun at the end of the 18th century. Material included.

Self-guided visit

School classes can also visit the castle on a self-guided tour by prior arrangement. Registration is made via the form; please bring the issued confirmation in printed form – admission is only permitted with it. One adult accompanying person must be present for every five children/young people. A visit outside opening hours is not possible.

Travel costs, canton of Bern

The Education and Culture Directorate of the canton of Bern offers culture vouchers for travel costs to Thun Castle (max. CHF 800.–). Register your visit at least 30 days in advance: kulturgesuche.be.ch.

Barbecue area & picnic

The castle’s own barbecue area for schools with a guided tour CHF 20.– (reservation required). Within the castle walls, picnicking is only permitted at designated places by arrangement.

Conditions for the visit
  • Deposit backpacks as instructed by the ticket office staff.
  • Stay together as a group; do not let children/young people walk through the castle unsupervised.
  • Do not run around within the castle walls.
  • Avoid noise (including music, mobile phones and other electronic devices).
  • Do not leave any graffiti.
  • Do not touch exhibits unless expressly permitted.
  • Do not leave any litter and behave appropriately towards other guests.

School classes are welcome at the castle. There are guided tours and workshops about life in the Middle Ages.

  • The children learn how people used to live: eating, living, writing and weaving.
  • You must register in advance.
  • For every 5 children, one adult is needed.
