An accessible visit
A historic castle places particular demands on access. We tell you honestly what is accessible and what is not — so you can plan your visit well and nobody travels here in vain.
Thun Castle dates from the 12th century. Stairs, narrow passages and the towers are part of the historic structure — in a protected building of this age, much cannot be changed. Part of the house is nevertheless well accessible, and where the building itself sets limits, we are glad to look for a solution together with you.
Wheelchair access
A lift takes you from the old town up to the Schlossberg. From there, the castle courtyard can be navigated by wheelchair, and the special exhibition in the Knights’ Hall can be visited by wheelchair at any time.
Not accessible are the permanent exhibition and the towers: they can only be reached by stairs, and there is no lift inside the building. A wheelchair-accessible toilet is available.
Blind or visually impaired
For groups of blind visitors and for guests with a visual impairment, we are glad to put the visit together individually. Please get in touch in advance — we will calmly discuss what is possible and prepare the tour accordingly. We recommend bringing an accompanying person in any case.
Strollers
Because of the many stairs, the museum is not suitable for strollers. We recommend a baby carrier; you can leave the stroller at the museum ticket desk or in the castle courtyard during your visit.
Getting here and parking
There is no parking at the castle itself. The nearest option is the City Ost Schlossberg car park (Burgstrasse 17); from there a lift takes you up to the old town. All details and maps: Directions & map.
